Transient and Permanent Fault Injection in VHDL Description of Digital Circuits  [PDF]
Parag K. Lala
Circuits and Systems (CS) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/cs.2012.32026
Abstract: The ability to evaluate the testability of digital circuits before they are actually implemented is critical for designing highly reliable systems. This feature enables designers to verify the fault detection capability of online as well as offline testable digital circuits for both permanent and transient faults, during the design stage of the circuits. This paper presents a technique for transient and permanent fault injection at the VHDL level description of both combinational and sequential digital circuits. Access to all VHDL blocks a system is straight forward using a specially designed single fault injection block. This capability of inserting transient and permanent faults should help in evaluating the testability of a digital system before it is actually implemented.
Multistep-ahead River Flow Prediction using LS-SVR at Daily Scale  [PDF]
Parag P. Bhagwat, Rajib Maity
Journal of Water Resource and Protection (JWARP) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jwarp.2012.47062
Abstract: In this study, potential of Least Square-Support Vector Regression (LS-SVR) approach is utilized to model the daily variation of river flow. Inherent complexity, unavailability of reasonably long data set and heterogeneous catchment response are the couple of issues that hinder the generalization of relationship between previous and forthcoming river flow magnitudes. The problem complexity may get enhanced with the influence of upstream dam releases. These issues are investigated by exploiting the capability of LS-SVR–an approach that considers Structural Risk Minimization (SRM) against the Empirical Risk Minimization (ERM)–used by other learning approaches, such as, Artificial Neural Network (ANN). This study is conducted in upper Narmada river basin in India having Bargi dam in its catchment, constructed in 1989. The river gauging station–Sandia is located few hundred kilometer downstream of Bargi dam. The model development is carried out with pre-construction flow regime and its performance is checked for both pre- and post-construction of the dam for any perceivable difference. It is found that the performances are similar for both the flow regimes, which indicates that the releases from the dam at daily scale for this gauging site may be ignored. In order to investigate the temporal horizon over which the prediction performance may be relied upon, a multistep-ahead prediction is carried out and the model performance is found to be reasonably good up to 5-day-ahead predictions though the performance is decreasing with the increase in lead-time. Skills of both LS-SVR and ANN are reported and it is found that the former performs better than the latter for all the lead-times in general, and shorter lead times in particular.

South African Journal of Radiology , 2012,
Abstract: Sialoblastomas are rare, locally aggressive, perinatal or congenital salivary gland tumours that mostly originate in the parotid gland. Significant variability in histological range and clinical course exists. This report is of a case of congenital sialoblastoma of the accessory parotid gland.
A Novel Approach for Simulation of Transmission Line Compensation
Parag Nijhawan
International Journal of Engineering and Technology , 2010,
Abstract: This paper presents an efficient method based on bus power injection for transmission line compensation. In this method, the load flow solution is first obtained using specified generations and loads. The terminal buses connecting the line to be compensated and the compensation level are identified. The differences of the line flows before and after compensation are injected in or out of the two terminal buses. The proposed method has been successfully used tosimulate compensation of transmission line by a series capacitor and then by SSSC.

BCS-BEC crossover in an optical lattice
Parag Ghosh
Physics , 2011,
Abstract: We model fermions with an attractive interaction in an optical lattice with a single-band Hubbard model away from half-filling with on-site attraction $U$ and nearest neighbor hopping $t$. Our goal is to understand the crossover from BCS superfluidity in the weak attraction limit to the BEC of molecules in the strong attraction limit, with particular emphasis on how this crossover in an optical lattice differs from the much better studied continuum problem. We use a large-$N$ theory with Sp(2N) symmetry to study the fluctuations beyond mean field theory. At T=0, we calculate across the crossover various observables, including chemical potential, gap, ground state energy, speed of sound and compressibility. The superfluid density $n_s$ is found to have non-trivial $U/t$ dependence in this lattice system. We show that the transition temperature $T_c$ scales with the energy gap in the weak coupling limit but crosses over to a $t^2/U$ scaling in the BEC limit, where phase fluctuations controlled by $n_s$ determine $T_c$. We also find, quite contrary to our expectations, that in the strong coupling limit, the large-$N$ theory gives qualitatively wrong trends for compressibility. A comparison with a simple Hartree shifted BCS theory, which takes into account both pairing and Hartree shifts, and correctly recovers the atomic limit and the right qualitative trend for compressibility, reveals that the large-$N$ theory on the lattice, although considers a larger number of diagrams, is in fact inferior to the simpler Hartree shifted BCS theory. The failure of the large-$N$ approach is explained by noting (i) the importance of Hartree shift in lattice problems, and (ii) inability of the large-$N$ approach to treat particle-particle and particle-hole channels at equal footing at the saddle point level.
